Winter sports (vocabulary)

Oh… Winter. I always associate Winter with snow, but this year I have seen only a few flakes, when I was in Poland for Christmas. Snow is rare in Cordoba and this year I think it isn’t its turn, it does not even rain here… But enough of forecasts because today I wanted to talk about different winter sports.

Do you have any favourite one? I do! Figure skating. And I think my friends are already sick of hearing me talking about it, but I cannot help it, I really like it. So the first winter sport that I want to present you is figure skating and if one day you feel like seeing it you should read this vocabulary:

patinador / patinadora (ice skater) – a person who skates on ice
solista (single) – a person who competes alone
pareja (pair skating) – pairs which start each competition, their program is similar to the soloists but contains its own elements
danza (ice dancing) – pairs who dance on ice without jumpings or elevations
programa corto (short program) – the program that lasts about three minutes, the first to present during competitions
programa libre (free program) – the program which takes about four and half minutes, the second to present during competitions
salto (jump) – can be single, double, triple or quadruple
combinación de saltos (combination of jumps) – two, three or more consecutive jumps
secuencia de saltos (sequence of jumps) – two, three or more jumps separated by a step or a turn
pirueta (spin) – spin in several positions, which can be vertical, sit, low arabesque, camel position and more
secuencia de pasos (sequence of steps) – ice skaters move on ice doing turns and steps
espiral (spiral) – obligatory in the female category, consists of sliding on ice on one skate, while the other leg is kept elevated above the hip
espiral de la muerte (death spiral) – obligatory in the category of pairs, the woman describes a circle on the edge of the skate maintaining a horizontal position while her partner holds her by the hand
elevación (lift) – in the category of pairs and ice dancing, the man lifts the woman above his head in different positions

What other sports are typical in winter? Let’s see…
patinaje de velocidad (speed s​kating) – consists of races for various distances on ice
patinaje sincronizado (synchronized skating) – several ice skaters have to slide on the ice at the same time
eslalom gigante (giant slalom) – consists of a descent in the shortest possible time between poles
salto de esquí (ski jumping) – consists of going down on a ramp and then start the flight in order to land as far as possible
esquí acrobático (freestyle skiing) – going down a snow slope several acrobatic jumps must be made
snowboarding (snowboarding) – to slide on a slope you use a snowboard, there are several modalities
hockey sobre hielo (ice hockey) – is played between two teams of six players with ice skates, the game consists of putting a disc into the goal with a stick
descenso en trineo (bobsleigh) – it’s about going down a tube covered with ice as fast as you can in a sleigh
curling (curling) – a sport of precision where two teams of four players compete sliding 8 stones over ice corridor
